Severe Bunion Pain during the Winter Season




We all know how bunions can get really painful if we neglect our feet. That’s why we buy all the stuff our doctors recommend to alleviate the bunion pain. These range from inserts, padding, custom-made orthotics and shoes that are not so pretty to look at but are good in preventing painful bunion bouts.

But during the winter season, a lot of people who successfully manage bunion pain throughout the year suddenly experience bunion pains.  While one of the best home remedies for bunion pain is dipping your feet in icy cold water after a hard day’s work, why doesn’t it have the same effect during the cold season?

The fact is, it is not the weather. Again, it’s the type of shoes you’re wearing that is causing the bunion pain. As the colder season approaches, fall and winter means a sudden shift in the types of clothing to wear. Some will dig in for old clothing, while others will go out and buy what is currently trending, and this includes new fashionable winter boots.  All of a sudden, you’re trading your flip flops or soft and airy shoes to sturdy, enclosed, heat-sealing boots and shoes.

With these types of boots or shoes, it is more likely that your bunion will get rubbed the wrong way or worse, get bumped since most of the time you won’t clearly see what you’re walking on because of the snow. In addition, wearing thick thermal socks can squeeze the big toe, further exacerbating bunion.

So what do you do with bunion pains during the winter? A visit to your podiatrist is the best solution for this. Surely, your doctor will know what to do for bunion pains, particularly in the cold season. There are also available winter shoes that are recommended for bunions which your doctor could suggest. Some patients opt to get surgery like minimally invasive bunion surgery, but this is done as a last resort, when all non-operative or non-invasive methods to relieve bunion pain have been exhausted.
